Report: Riot to require teams to contractually employ players, coaching staff

Riot Games are reportedly planning to require NA and EU LCS teams to contractually employ their players and coaching staff in 2017, according to a report by ESPN’s Jacob Wolf. It also states that Riot is considering raising their minimum player salary.

According to the report, a number of LCS teams employ players and coaches as independent contractors, which means they do not receive benefits that are often given to full-time employees such as health insurance and retirement savings plans. Players would also be paid with taxes withheld up front instead of needing to pay all taxes owed at the end of the year.

The report also states that Cloud9, H2k-Gaming, Immortals, Team Liquid, Team SoloMid and Unicorns of Love already employ their players as employees, but other LCS teams would need to make changes should the new rule be put into effect.
